Hey, I'm

Samuel Fernandes

Software Engineer · Feedzai

I'm a Software Engineer at Feedzai, working on the real-time payment fraud detection product. It evaluates live payment transactions and decides, in milliseconds, whether they're fraud or not.

Over the past couple of years I've been leading a few engineering initiatives:

  • Migrated the data science environment from on-premises and bare EC2 deployments to Kubernetes, improving operational resilience and significantly reducing infrastructure costs
  • Drove Graviton (ARM) architecture adoption, improving price-performance across workloads
  • Leveraged KEDA and HPA to design a more robust and cost-efficient autoscaling strategy for variable traffic

I participate in the on-call rotation, supporting production incidents related to the product I own. Once an incident is mitigated, I contribute to root cause analysis, document findings and action items, and ensure timely follow-through until issues are fully resolved.

I have an M.Sc. in Informatics and Computer Engineering from FEUP (Universidade do Porto). My thesis was in machine learning, and I got a paper published along the way.

My main stack is Java, Go, Python, Helm, Kubernetes, and AWS, though I pick up whatever the work needs.
